Chuck Osborn's 10 Favorite Games Ever
From the desk of Managing Editor Chuck Osborn...
As you can imagine, it’s a stupidly difficult task trying to whittle a lifetime of game-playing down to just 10 games. Sure, I could -- and very nearly did -- lengthen the list so that I could fit in some more recent favorites, but that felt like cheating. So I kept it to a nice round list of 10 games: the ones that touched me the most personally or had me playing them over and over again.
This means I had to cut out a lot of great games, especially more recent ones that I loved. Games like Batman: Arkham City, LEGO
, The Walking Dead series, Skyrim, DC Universe Online, and more. Plus the venerable oldies that most gamers would yell at me for not putting on this list like the original Legend of Zelda or Super Metroid. This list isn’t necessarily about quality, though -- these are my personal favorites. Each one is a step in my formative journey as a gamer.

FIFA 15 More Realistic Than Ever With 'Agility and Control'
A new video from EA Sports shows off FIFA 15's "Agility and Control" feature, showing how heightened physics adds responsiveness and fluidity to the gameplay.
Players now demonstrate a better ability to counterbalance when moving rapidly, and the movement and personality of real-life players is reflected in their in-game counterparts. For example, Leo Messi, a predominantly left-footed player, will also play with that foot in-game.
New physics has been applied to the ball, which will keep momentum and accurate spin, adding variety and realism to players as they pass, dribble, and control the ball. Additionally, small details such as shoulder barges, fall physics, and even shirt-pulling will be depicted, adding further realism to the game.

World of Warcraft Getting Some New Faces-- Literally
Soon, the familiar faces in World of Warcraft will be a thing of the past. No, Blizzard isn't radically altering the look of its gold-standard MMO, but instead it's bringing characters' faces inline with more modern graphical techniques.
It's no easy task, however. According to the latest edition of Artcraft, the low-polygon heads and texture overlays meant things like facial expressions were simply "painted on" the texture. Blizzard points to a sneering Dwarf lip as an example. Before, it was just a simple addition of a sneering lip texture over the relatively flat character model, but with the new facial customization system in place coming with World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor, a sneer means adjusting the model to pose a sneer, adding the appropriate textures, then meshing "that base pose with all of the existing emotes and animations."

Gearbox Fights the Aliens: Colonial Marines Lawsuit
Gearbox Software is fighting against a lawsuit with SEGA, which claimed Gearbox funneled money for Aliens: Colonial Marines into other projects. Documents obtained by Polygon detail the ongoing drama's next steps.
Last year, plaintiff Damion Perrine filed a class action lawsuit against Gearbox and SEGA, saying that the pair "falsely advertised Aliens by showing demos at trade shows like PAX and E3 which didn't end up being accurate representations of the final product." According to the lawsuit, Gearbox and SEGA "never told anyone—consumers, industry critics, reviewers, or reporters—that their 'actual gameplay' demonstration advertising campaign bore little resemblance to the retail product that would eventually be sold to a large community of unwitting purchasers." At the time, Gearbox told us that the lawsuit was "beyond meritless" and "frivolous."

Week in Tech: Random Screen Round Up
Never before in the history of mankind have so many PC display options emerged in such a short space of time. At least, that’s the way it feels right now and in the time-honoured journalistic tradition I’m certainly not going to let fact checking get in the way of a mediocre narrative. It’s, er, monitormageddon people! In all seriousness, it’s enough to keep up with all the 120Hz, G-Sync, FreeSync and 4K nonsense. But now the mix of panel sizes, types and resolutions is beginning to spin out of control. I’m rapidly approaching the point where I haven’t a clue what I would personally plump for. Things will settle down in the next 18 months or so as the sweet spot emerges, no doubt. But that’s no help in the here and now. If you’re in the monitor market today, what the devil are you supposed to do?

Lionhead and EA Veterans Announce Multiplayer Sandbox Oort Online
UK-based studio Wonderstruck, whose employee lineup features many veterans of companies such as Lionhead and EA, has announced that its next project Oort Online is now available for early access and pre-order.
Oort Online is an ambitious voxel-based multiplayer sandbox that will have players visiting different planets, each with unique appearances, resources, and player creations. You'll be able to choose what sort of life you lead on Oort, whether it's that of a temple-raiding explorer or a shrewd trader, and craft tools and weapons for your chosen path.
The team hopes that Oort will become a "second home" for its players, and is running a crowdfunding campaign in the hopes of making that dream a reality. Instead of going the usual Kickstarter route, Oort Online can be backed via its website, allowing backers to select from various reward tiers. The lowest paid tier entitles you to a game key upon launch for $15, though if you're really keen, you could pay anywhere from $95 to a whopping $5000 for instant pre-alpha access.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Nemesis DLC Release Date Announced
Developer Infinity Ward announced today that the fourth and final DLC pack for Call of Duty: Ghosts is incoming.
Titled Nemesis, the pack includes four new multiplayer maps and the final chapter in the story-driven Extinction saga.
The first of the maps, Goldrush, takes place in an abandoned gold mine and contains two roving mine carts, giving players a fast-travel option to traverse the environment. Completion of the map's field order will call in a pack of wolves to take out other players.
Subzero is set on a mysteriously abandoned Canadian submarine base. This medium-sized map features a unique kill streak that calls in a blizzard seemingly occupied by angry and vengeful spirits.

Today Is Your Last Chance To Register Mario Kart 8 for a Free Wii U Game
Today is your last chance to get a free Wii U game for registering your copy of Mario Kart 8. The special promotion, which was announced in April, ends today, July 31, and you don't want to miss it.
All you need to do is register your copy of Mario Kart 8--purchased either by itself at retail, through the eShop, or via the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle--at Club Nintendo.
The impressive promotion is good in North America and Europe, though the free games on offer vary by region (spoilers: Europe is a lot better!). You can see a breakdown of the free games below.
North America [Instructions on how to claim]:
Europe [Instructions on how to claim]:
- Game & Wario
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
- Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games
- Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
- Nintendo Land
- New Super Mario Bros. U
- Pikmin 3
- Sonic Lost World
- Wii Party U
- The Wonderful 101
Mario Kart 8's strong performance of 2.82 million copies sold in its first month, along with a surge in Wii U hardware sales, was not enough to keep Nintendo out of the red for the latest quarter. The company posted a $97 million loss for the three-month period ended June 30, it was announced this week.
Mario Kart 8 may be off to a hot start, but it is nowhere near Mario Kart Wii, which has sold more than 35 million copies to date. Of course, that game has been available for years, while Mario Kart 8 is still very new. For more on Mario Kart 8, check out GameSpot's review.

This Week in the Nintendo eShop
We're on the cusp of "MegAugust" here on the eShop, as every week in August, a new Mega Man game will come out on Wii U Virtual Console. It started a day early with Mega Man Battle Network, the 2001 GBA RPG. Aside from that, this week has a few updated releases of games, including the 3DS remake of the 1992 Genesis game Steel Empire and a remastered version of the PC rhythm adventure Frederic: Resurrection of Music. Don't forget the sales, too, as Assassin's Creed IV is getting dropped to $30 on the Wii U eShop next week.
Mega Man Battle Network ($7.99)
Originally debutting in 2001 on Game Boy Advance, Mega Man Battle Network is another spinoff of the classic series but this time it's a tactical RPG. Set in a world where Mega Man is a computer program (dubbed MegaMan.EXE) and the villain is the WWW organization, Battle Network is pretty out there, but the real-time grid-based combat is engrossing, fusing the Mega Man style with an RPG format. The story's dumb, though. Real dumb.

Aegis Defenders Hoping To Be Money Makers On Kickstarter
Aegis Defenders is the latest game to prove that you can pretty much just roll a pair of dice to determine two genres to slam together. The tower defense platformer is absolutely gorgeous, set on a post-ruination Earth ruled by a few remaining AIs. Most technology is viewed as dark magic so main characters Bart and his granddaughter Clu naturally have a fascination and need for it. They’re ‘Ruinhunters’ attempting to save their village, but won’t be able to without an ancient artifact (and $65,000 from the generous public). It’s made by the extraordinarily-named GUTS Department and you can see their pitch video plus thoughts on a preview demo below.

Nyyoooom: F1 2014 And 2015 Announced
In the way that mood cycles can revolve around Christmas or birthdays, do diehard game fans slip into emotional rhythms around marketing cycles? Do Call of Duty fans start to feel excited around the start of May, fidgeting and laughing more than usual, expecting the announcement of the next annualised sequel? Is E3 why I grow increasingly angry and desperate to flee to a forest over May?
Late July brings announcements from Codemasters of their next Formula 1 race ‘em up, which is why you may have been anxiously checking your phone and inbox. But as well as F1 2014, today they announced another game too. One breaking the rhythm. A “next-gen” F1 game is coming earlier than usual next year. What does this mean? And how do you feel?

Colin McRae Rally Released On Steam, Sort Of, Not Really
It’s easy to think that simulation and sports game are advancing along a straight line of progress, each sequel or yearly iteration delivering a game with better physics models, more polygons, and all towards some objective perfection. To this strawman that exists within my brain I say: not true! As would have been interestingly demonstrated by Codemasters releasing Colin McRae Rally 2.0 on Steam today. The game, a precursor to the modern Dirt series, was originally released in 2000. It was good.
Except that’s not what has happened here. This game, called simply Colin McRae Rally, is only “based on” that old game. Instead this is the PC release of last year’s mobile version, which used tracks, cars and audio from the older games but was otherwise its own thing. Is that misleading? It certainly confused me for a bit.

LA Cops contains more comedy moustaches per screen than the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage video and Anchorman put together. It’s a celebration of facial furniture, with Syndicate-inspired shooting in between bouts of Handsome Cop Admiration. As well as moustaches, the game includes destructible scenery and a buddy system that allows a single player to control a two-cop team, implementing tactics to lure bad guys onto the disco killing floor. The Early Access version, which is available now, contains eight levels, with a total of twenty scenes, six cops and five weapons. Each cop has a story to tell and attributes to upgrade.

PlayStation Now Public Beta Starts Today on PS4 With 100+ Games; Check Out This Walkthrough Video
Sony's much-anticipated game streaming service, PlayStation Now, is now available through a public beta in the United States and Canada for the PlayStation 4. The service has been in closed beta since January, and will come to other platforms and regions sometime in the future.
To help get you up to speed on everything the PlayStation Now beta has to offer, Sony released a walkthrough video featuring commentary from Jack Buser, who is senior director for the service. More than 100 games are available through PlayStation Now currently, and you can rent them for a variety of durations (as short as four hours) and for a range of prices (as low as $1.99).
If you rent a game and then want to purchase the full product later on, your progress will be saved through Sony's cloud servers, allowing you to pick up where you left off.
The first thing you'll want to do when you fire up the PlayStation Now beta (available in the PlayStation Store on PS4) is access the "Connection Test." This will determine if your broadband connection is beefy enough to run PlayStation Now and get good results. Sony recommends at least a 5Mbps connection for an optimal experience on PlayStation Now.
PlayStation Now supports both wired and wireless connection types, but Buser says a wired connection is preferable because it is often more stable than wireless.
In addition, Buser stressed that the PlayStation Now beta you see today is just that, a beta. It's "early days," he says, adding that it is important that users share feedback with Sony so they can make the product better in the long run. "We're going to be listening closely to what the gamers tell us, and [PlayStation Now] will evolve over time."
Though you will only find a la carte rental options on PlayStation Now today, Buser reiterated that Sony is planning to offer a Netflix-style subscription plan sometime in the future. "It's definitely something [that's] in the works. So stay tuned for that," he said.
For more on PlayStation Now, check out GameSpot's in-depth interview with Sony about the streaming service.

Freeware Garden: Hets
Freeware Garden searches the corners of the internet to highlight one free game every day.
I take it hets isn’t a reference to the Argentinean Querandí mountain tribe of the Pampas. It probably isn’t even aware of Bergman’s 1944 short movie either, though there’s definitely something sadistic to it. I mean, teasing a “very evil final boss” really isn’t such a nice thing to do, especially considering I’ll never get to meet the thing. So, yeah, sadism and thus also a unique kind of pleasure.
hets is unashamedly, brutally and in a way wisely hard. Or, at the very least, it does feel so to me.

Mobile Pick: FlyCraft Herbie and the Crazy Machines (nlogn)
Though I'm frankly bored of casual-looking, free-to-play games for my tablet, I must admit that FlyCraft Herbie: Crazy Machines seemed both intriguing enough to try out and, well, good enough to actually recommend. Developers nlogn have created a physics-based action game that transcends its cute graphics and enters brutal, satisfying, hardcore territory. Just using the two rockets strapped to each of your demented flying(-ish) contraptions you get to attempt to navigate cartoony mazes, when performing a simple 90 degrees turn is a task that will take time to master.
Getting even simple things done though is a reward in itself.
FlyCraft Herbie: Crazy Machines is free to download for iOS, Android and Blackberry. It comes with relatively unobtrusive in-app purchases.

AI Interference: Space Social Sim Human Orbit
If any AI researchers reading RPS need a human mind to digitise and put in control of a space station, I humbly volunteer. I would be a good caretaker AI. I’m responsible about turning lights off. Each day with me in charge brings a new fun holiday with its own mandatory customs. Yes, I would fake work orders to put plants and fountains everywhere, but people would like that. I label deadly laser grids clearly. And I’d only read your e-mail because I care.
Should our readers prove disappointments, I suppose I’ll make do with playing Human Orbit when it comes out, a “sci-fi social simulator” with the promise of “procedurally-generated storytelling.”

It’s taken me no small amount of time just to work out what J.U.L.I.A.: Among The Stars is (no thanks to the title – meaningless acronym AND subtitle? Come on now). Contrary to screenshots, it’s a full adventure game rather than a hidden object one. The plot follows Rachel Manners, an astro-biologist, who wakes from cryo-sleep to find she’s the only member of her expedition still alive. Because it’s a video game, the ship’s also damaged and the titular AI is temperamental. The game’s actually a remake of one from 2012, which Adam had a gander at, funded through IndieGoGo.

The higher or additional costs of the Premium Beta and Lifetime Expansion Pass are no longer available.

Call of Duty: Ghosts' Fourth and Final Expansion Teased in New Video
Activision today released a teaser trailer for Nemesis, the fourth and final expansion for Infinity Ward's 2013 first-person shooter Call of Duty: Ghosts. The 15-second trailer is a wild montage of images for what appear to be score streaks.
You'll also notice that at the very end, the "g" and the "s" in the word "Ghosts" come into focus last, which makes the word "host" flash on the screen for a brief moment. How or if this is tied to the Nemesis expansion for Call of Duty: Ghosts remains to be seen.
The Nemesis expansion follows previously released add-ons for Call of Duty: Ghosts, including Onslaught, Devastation, and Invasion. All four expansions are included with the $50 Call of Duty: Ghosts season pass or can be purchased separately for $15 each.
Activision has not announced a release date for Nemesis. When it does arrive, however, it will be exclusive to Xbox platforms for a period of 30 days per Activision's longstanding arrangement with Microsoft.
The next Call of Duty game is November's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which developer Sledgehammer Games says is "not the same old Call of Duty." Characters in Advanced Warfare can wear exoskeletons that grant players superabilities. We will get to see how these abilities, like increased dexterity and super-jumping, affect multiplayer when Activision takes the lid off the mode on August 11.

Final Fantasy Themed Restaurant Opens in Tokyo
Maybe it's not entirely original (or necessarily true anymore) to complain that Japan gets all the cool stuff, but in the case of Tokyo's newly opened Final Fantasy themed restaurant, Japan really did get the cool stuff.
The restaurant is a joint collaboration between the Pasela Resorts company and Square Enix, and is called Eorzea Cafe.
The eatery, which opened today in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, is based on the world of Final Fantasy XIV. This means that while patrons won't be able to order One-Winged Angel food cake for desert, they can still order food and drinks that draw inspiration from the world of Final Fantasy XIV. Since the games all share common threads, the menu will satisfy any fan of the series. Fancy something spicy? Order the Bahamut Giga Flare Curry. How about a Weight of the Land Titan Burger, for a little bit more casual fare?

Dote Night: The Science And Ice Cream Of Losing Streaks
Part of a miscellany of serious thoughts, animal gifs, and anecdotage from the realm of MOBAs/hero brawlers/lane-pushers/ARTS/tactical wizard-em-ups. One day Pip might even tell you the story of how she bumped into Na’Vi’s Dendi at a dessert buffet cart.
I am on a horrific Dota 2 losing streak at the moment.
Unrelatedly, this week’s Dote Night will be about losing streaks and Dota 2. I’ve been reading through the wisdom of SCIENCE to find out more about losing streaks and, hopefully, how to fix them.

Crytek USA's Game Hunt Goes to German Team
Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age is no longer in development at Cytek's Austin studio, with the company moving the project to Crytek Frankfurt in Germany.
VentureBeat reports that Crytek USA also saw layoffs with development of Hunt shifting to the Frankfurt studio. Crytek reportedly plans to transition the Austin-based house into a support team for North American developers that license CryEngine.
"We would like to thank all our staff — past and present — in both Nottingham and Austin for their contributions to the company, and we wish all the very best to anyone who may no longer be under the Crytek banner moving forward," said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli in a statement.

Revolution Continues: Deep Silver Buy Homefront Off Crytek
Ironically for a game about reclaiming a homeland, Homefront is now moving on again. After a month of downplaying reports of financial strife, Crytek have confirmed they’re selling the Homefront property and all its assets to Deep Silver. The team working on open-world FPS sequel Homefront: The Revolution–which was only announced in June–at Crytek UK will transfer over to a new Deep Silver studio to finish the game. Crytek had itself bought Homefront, which was created at Kaos Studios, last year in the collapse of THQ.
Crytek’s co-op shooter Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age is also moving, going to the Frankfurt headquarters as the Austin studio making it is cut down to offering CryEngine licensee support.

Tactical Wizarding Action In Dragon Age: Inquisition
I hadn’t noticed until now, but the vast majority of the footage we’ve had of Dragon Age: Inquisition hasn’t featured combat in the way it will be played. Everyone will use the over-the-shoulder camera for, oh, 24 seconds or so then never again. Far more useful is the free-roaming tactical view that pauses time, giving you a moment for a sip of tea and a good think. Perhaps you’d like to target your fireball over here, sir? Or bash this ingrate’s head in with a warhammer, ma’am? Bioware, continuing a trend of blitzing us with trailers at Ubisoft pace, show it off below.
