PlayStation Home Was a Commercial Success
NDreams CEO Patrick O’Luanaigh calls Sony’s PlayStation Home a commercial success in a goodbye letter to the virtual world.
In a post on GamesIndustry.biz, O’Luanaigh says that UK developer nDream and other studios generated up to seven-figure revenues for years on Home, refuting claims that Home is a “commercial failure”.
O'Luanaigh lobbied Sony to let nDreams create unique virtual content for PlayStation Home before it went live in December 2008. NDreams launched Xi, an alternate reality game that combined “Home spaces, games, websites and live events around the world”. The studio was a driving force behind the project's success.

Fiction writing adventure game, Elegy for a Dead World, now on Kickstarter
Text-based games exist in several forms, including interactive fiction, but never had I seen a game where the player is the one in charge of writing the prose until Elegy for a Dead World.
Elegy for a Dead World, which we've covered previously here, is a text-driven adventure game about exploring and documenting the remnants of dead civilizations. You do this by adventuring through gorgeous hand-drawn scenes, and reacting to writing prompts by filling in the blanks.
Completed narratives can then be shared and read through Steam Workshop.
Developer Dejobaan Games stresses how in Elegy for a Dead World, anyone can be a writer, but that doesn't mean the game won't pose some challenges.
From the game's Kickstarter page:
"Each world offers multiple sets of prompts, each intended to inspire you to write a different story about it. Elegy might ask you to write a short story about an individual's final days, a song about resignation, or a poem about war. In the more advanced levels, you'll sometimes get new information halfway through your story which casts a new light on things and forces you to take your story in a different direction. We like to think of those as puzzles -- writing yourself out of a corner, so to speak."
Elegy for a Dead World is on Kickstarter for the next 20 days, and looking to raise $48k. Head on over if that's your thing!

Trailer: Psychic-platforming title psyscrolr for Wii U uses touch screen creatively
The Wii U's touchscreen game pad has never really caught the creative eye of the development community, indie or otherwise. Sure there are games that use it, but few do so in a creative way. That's part of why psyscrolr stands out. The game is a platformer that uses the screen for environmental interaction, which sounds kind of obvious until you realize almost no one has done it.
You'll spend a good deal of your time in psyscrolr like you do in most platformers, running and jumping along. But sometimes you come across blocks that have to be pushed from side to side, or enemies that you'll need to tap and kill with fireballs. It's a pretty novel approach and it's a little surprising people aren't using the controller screen in this way already, but hey, it wouldn't be right to complain about that now since this looks pretty fun.
Actos Games will be releasing psyscrolr exclusively through the Wii U eShop this Fall. No price has been revealed.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Review Roundup
The release of Lord of the Rings game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is now less than a week away out now.
Below is a roundup of scores and editor reflections you can look over ahead of the game's release on September 30 today. Check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic for more on the game's critical reception.
- Game: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
- Developer: Monolith Productions
- Platforms: Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC
- Release date: September 30
- Price: $60
GameSpot -- 8/10
"[T]his is a great game in its own right, narratively disjointed but mechanically sound, made up of excellent parts pieced together in excellent ways. I already knew what future lay in store for Middle-earth as I played Shadow of Mordor; I'm hoping that my own future might one day bring another Lord of the Rings adventure as stirring as this one." - Kevin VanOrd [Full review]
Destructoid -- 6/10
"Ultimately, like many ambitious projects, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor doesn't deliver on everything it sets out to do. Although Monolith's heart is in the right place and the studio honors the lore, it doesn't really add anything that's worth seeing outside of some solid open-world gameplay. It isn't a bad game, it just feels far too repetitive for its own good." - Chris Carter [Full review]
Joystiq -- 5/5
"What would have otherwise been a competent sandbox game with solid combat mechanics and an interesting twist on a known fantasy world is elevated by the Nemesis System. Shadow of Mordor is the strategic person's action game." - Alexander Sliwinski [Full review]
Polygon -- 9.5/10
"Shadow of Mordor is that ultimate rarity. It tells a fun little story that would be enough to hold up most games on its own. But it also provides all of the tools to ensure that the most interesting tales to come out of the game will be the ones that were not scripted." - Philip Kollar [Full review]
IGN -- 9.3/10
"Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor stands out from other open-world action games by putting a great new layer on top of the trail that Batman blazed. I was surprised at how well it integrates its excellent combat with rewarding feedback and progression not just for me, but also for my enemies. I've had many more memorable and unpredictable battles with its randomized Warchiefs and captains than I did in the scripted campaign missions, and I expect those to keep on coming." - Dan Stapleton [Full review]
The Escapist -- 4.5/5
"As an open-world game set in Middle-earth, Shadow of Mordor delivers unique emergent gameplay, finely-tuned combat mechanics, and a story which avoids typical fantasy fare. While the main storyline can be finished relatively quickly, there is a lot of content in Mordor for you to pursue however you like." - Greg Tito [Full review]
A list of additional scores from other publications can be found below:
- GamesRadar - 9/10
- Game Informer - 8.25/10
- GamesBeat - 80/100

A post on the official Bethesda Blog has revealed a handful of tips for surviving the challenges of The Evil Within.
Written by guest editor Fran Reyes, the post details some of the challenges players will face and offers some sage advice to make sure protagonist Sebastian Castellanos doesn't meet his grotesque, untimely end.
According to Reyes, being aware of weapon types and managing them effectively will play a major role in one's success.
"From the standard-issue handgun Sebastian has holstered during his initial investigation to the more advanced weaponry he stumbles across, as well as the skills and abilities you’ll slowly upgrade and master — there’s a lot of stuff to juggle if you’re going to survive The Evil Within," Fran writes.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments Review
As far as games go, famed detective Sherlock Holmes has never looked or played better than he does in Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments. The latest in developer Frogwares’ adventure series uses Unreal Engine 3 for a much-needed graphics upgrade. The more disappointing news is that Holmes’ final deductions are based largely on a web of circumstantial evidence.
Crimes and Punishments takes place over the course of six perplexing, well-written cases that give Holmes ample opportunities to do what Holmes does best: Snoop around crime scenes for clues, interrogate suspects, and talk down to just about everyone he meets. Murder is afoot in each of the cases, but that doesn’t stop them from being diverse; from a gruesome death by whaling harpoon to an Egyptian-style ritual killing, the plots had me riveted. And like a good winding mystery, the person who did it is rarely the one you suspect initially.

May I Have This Cordial Minuet?
An occult-themed game of skill where players use magic squares to try to generate real cash all rooted in the developer’s own experiences with Texas hold ‘em poker? Why yes, Jason Rohrer does have a new game in the works, thanks for asking. It’s called Cordial Minuet because an occult-themed game without an anagram would be even sadder than a gaming news article without a pun.
The website for the game itself reads like a cross between a self-help seminar and a grimoire but Kotaku had a play and what they describe is far less demonic ritual and far more numerical mind games for money.

Why Revelations 2 Isn’t Called ‘Resident Evil 7’
Resident Evil Revelations 2 aims for a more traditional Resident Evil-style horror experience than the main series, which recently saw Resident Evil 6 focus intently on action sequences -- so why not rebrand the spin-off series and name this new game Resident Evil 7?
When asked about rebranding Revelations 2, or absorbing it into the main series as Resident Evil 7, Capcom Producer Michiteru Okabe told IGN that the mainline games and sub-series serve different purposes.
“I think the big numbered titles are where we try the big sort of experiments, bold new things,” Okabe said. “We see what sticks, and continue to refine those ideas. I think with the spin-off series we have the opportunity to do something a little different."

The Crew Xbox One/PS4 Beta Launches Today, Progress Doesn't Transfer to Full Game
Racing fans eager to try out the current-gen console version of The Crew will have the opportunity to begin doing so today. This is a real, technical beta, though, which means you shouldn't expect any of your progress to carry over to the full game.
Speaking with The Examiner about the beta, creative director Julian Gerighty was asked about whether you'll be able to take your beta accomplishments with you. "I don't think so, no, [progress won't be saved]," he responded.
The closed beta starting today is not the game's first. Like those previous betas, the purpose of this latest one is not merely to promote the game. "This is the thing, all of our betas so far have been technical betas," Gerighty said. "They are not marketing betas. They are not there for anything else except for learning how we can make the experience better when we launch."
With this not being the first beta for The Crew, Gerighty offered a friendly suggestion to those who have already spent a lot of time with the game: Don't burn yourself out. "I'd hate for people to do three betas and not have anything to look forward to in the final game," he said. "The game is good, don’t get me wrong and the last thing I want to do is send a message of 'do not play the console beta.' Please play it, but it's a technical beta and you shouldn't expect everything to be unlocked and transfer to the full game."
That wasn't the only reference he made to the fact that the beta is a limited slice of the game. He also stated, "There are lots of functions that probably won't be turned on." That's to be expected, of course, but the beta sounds fairly extensive. You can read our impressions of an earlier beta on PC here.
The Crew is an open-world racing game that lets you drive across a virtual version of the United States. It's headed to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox 360 (but not PlayStation 3) on November 11.

Why Arkham Knight's Gotham is 5 Times Larger Than Arkham City
Batman: Arkham Knight's world may be five-times larger than that of its predecessor, but that doesn't mean it can't tell a compelling story.
Speaking to IGN at last week's EGX convention, Rocksteady marketing manager Guy Perkins talked a bit about the decision to evolve from the confined and slightly more linear gameplay we saw as part of Arkham Asylum, then why this expanded as the series went on.
"I think we’ve always taken pride in the stories we tell," he explained. "We try to create that very cinematic story-telling experience through the game. Obviously Asylum was the starting point for that, but the intimate cat-and-mouse gameplay between the Joker and Batman really demanded it took place in the pressure cooker of the Asylum.

WWE 2K15 Career Mode Charts Journey From NXT to WrestleMania
Publishing label 2K Games has revealed new details of the career mode that will play at the centre of WWE 2K15.
The branded "MyCareer mode"--named after the same concept in NBA2K15--takes players on a journey from the earliest stages of their career to the main event at flagship pay-per-view events such as WrestleMania and SummerSlam.
After creating a wrestler with the game's character creation tool, players will be taken to the WWE Performance Center where they will be trained by the facility's real-life head coach, Bill DeMott.
During and after this (kayfabe) training, players will begin to forge alliances, build rivalries, and interact on social media, all of which will help shape each character and how fans respond to them.
2K said this game mode offers opportunities to "upgrade their attributes, acquire new abilities, skills and moves, earn new clothing and unlock managers".
It added: "These decisions, along with a player's win/loss record, will lead to multiple branching storylines, surprises, twists and turns that offer significant replay value to explore different career paths."
After Developmental, players move on to NXT, which is WWE's own house show for new talent. Here, wrestlers will encounter new faces and heels such as Rusev, Bo Dallas, Adrian Neville, Sami Zayn and Corey Graves. (2K also confirmed that these will be playable characters).
Onwards, players move to WWE's main roster, fighting through matches set up by the show's General Manager Vickie Guerrero, who also adds various ultimatums and scenarios in the storyline.
"Players will develop alliances and rivalries while competing to win spots on WWE pay-per-view events and flagship shows like Monday Night Raw and SmackDown," 2K said.
Soon after, players will begin competing for titles such as the United States Championship and Intercontinental Championship, and if successful will move onto SummerSlam and WrestleMania, where the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will be on the line as the final prize.
"MyCareer is a mode beloved by our NBA 2K fans and is a perfect fit for WWE 2K15," said Greg Thomas of the game's co-development studio, Visual Concepts.
"We are eager to deliver a comprehensive career mode experience for the first time and consider its inclusion a critical step forward for the franchise."
Although 2K Games says the comprehensive career mode is a "first", other WWE games have included career modes that cover key branching storylines across various house shows and main events.
WWE 2K15 ships on Oct 28 in North America for PS3 and Xbox 360, while the current-gen versions have been delayed to November 18.
WWE's plan to include CM Punk's likeness in the game has not been finalised since the wrestler's legal team objected to the inclusion.

Interview: Gearbox On Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
With every new release, the Borderlands universe becomes increasingly ridiculous. It’s been happening for a while now, with the puns, the slapstick and the hidden pop culture references that pepper Borderlands 2 and further season its DLC. I’m hardly complaining, because I’ve gradually disengaged from the first-person shooter over the last few years, confronted again and again by far too many po-faced, monochrome military affairs. Borderlands 2 has been a welcome exception.
Like a sudden burst of ketchup from a thoroughly-spanked Heinz bottle, even more of that often unsubtle flavouring is set to season our PCs very soon. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel comes out in two weeks. Developed in conjunction with 2K Australia, the Pre-Sequel is exactly what you’d expect from the series: more jokes, more cartoonish violence, more character diversity and a further expansion of a gun collection that would already make any Tom Clancy fan spurt like… well, like a sudden burst of ketchup from a thoroughly-spanked Heinz bottle.

Shadow of Mordor Launch Trailer Invites You Back to Middle-Earth
Warner Bros. and Monolith Productions on Tuesday released the launch trailer for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The two-minute video (above) sets up the game's story (it's set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings), highlights some of the brutal Orc enemies you'll face, and shows off key characters such as Gollum and the ring forger Celebrimbor.
It also teases out the game's ambitious Nemesis System, through which enemies learn and adapt throughout the game. We noted in our review how this system elevates the excellence of the game, and it's also drawn praise from one of the top executives at Warner Bros.' gaming division.
"The team and technology powering the Nemesis System helped us develop an emotional investment between each player and their enemies, which creates a truly memorable gaming experience unlike anything that's been done before," Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president Martin Tremblay said in a statement.
In addition to the main Shadow of Mordor game you can buy today for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, or PC, you can pick up the game's $25 DLC pass. It includes access to a host of upcoming content, including new missions, runes, modes, and future content to be announced later.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Goes Gold Ahead of October Launch
Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has announced that October's Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has gone gold ahead of its launch on October 14 for last-generation consoles. That means development on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game is finished.
Though Pitchford announced the news, it was 2K Australia that served as the main developer for The Pre-Sequel. Gearbox is busy with its own projects, including Battleborn, and the new franchise it's creating out of Brothers In Arms: Furious 4. The Texas-based studio is also collaborating with Telltale Games for Tales from the Borderlands.
The Pre-Sequel may be a smaller game than 2012's Borderlands 2, but it is still a "full-blown" AAA title, according to 2K Games parent publisher Take-Two Interactive. As for why the game is not coming to Xbox One or PlayStation 4, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said a number of factors--but mostly time and money--played into the decision to make it exclusive to last-gen and PC.
The game's big draw is that it's set on Pandora's moon, which is an area players have long desired to visit, according to Slatoff. The game has big shoes to fill, as Borderlands 2 has shipped more than 10 million copies to date.

For Everything A Reason? F.E.A.R. Online
F.E.A.R. Online’s open beta test begins on October 7th, ahead of full launch on the 17th, and signups are now active. Go! Run! Register! It’s free!
Or perhaps not. The original F.E.A.R. takes place almost entirely in a succession of rather ordinary office buildings but that doesn’t matter because the combat is absolutely splendid. Bullets have tremendous impact and slow motion slides across debris-strewn rooms, ending in a chunky boot to the face, are like a John Woo shoot-out with weighty momentum in place of balletic grace. Thanks to a hard-working community, the multiplayer component is still available to play and I’m not sure how F.E.A.R.O. intends to lure people into its own take on the series’ combat and…gulp…lore.

Few Things Are as Bewitching as This Retro 2D Ocarina of Time
Okay look, let's try and enjoy this before Nintendo's legal team gets involved because, while it is a categorical breach of copyright, this project is just too wonderful to disregard completely.
A band of industrious (and currently anonymous) modders are trying to build a 2D version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, reconfigured with a top-down view and a style so lovingly reminiscent of that beautiful SNES game, A Link to the Past.
If the task of rebuilding Shigeru Miyamoto's defining masterpiece wasn't daunting enough, the team has pledged to use "no already-existing engine and no utilities such as Game Maker."
So it is being built from scratch, piece-by-piece, which means it automatically qualifies as a vapourware candidate (sorry for shattering dreams). Equally perilous is the use of existing audio files from the N64 original, which I'm sure swings this into a the realm of plagiarism (again, sorry).
But just in case things soon turn sour, let's enjoy the fantasy of what this project could deliver: A besprited Ganondorf on Horseback, once feared, now slightly adorable in pixellated form. Quaintly crap lo-fi versions of the Ocarina songs as if they were custom ringtones. The lush forestry of The Lost Woods, pressed into a glorious 2D mush of greens and browns. You know you want it.
Also, the team are promising bonus content, such as unfreezing Zora's Domain. Take a closer look on the mod's website, and a view of the game in the videos above and below.
PS: If you fancy a more official (and reliably brilliant) version of Zelda, you could always try the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time.

Battlefield 4 Fall Patch Is 'Fairly Massive'
EA has confirmed that Battlefield 4's "fall patch" update is imminent.
An early morning tweet from the official Battlefield twitter account indicates the "anticipated" patch is finally rolling out.
Battlelog is currently down in preparations for today's Battlefield 4 game update. It should be back up in approximately an hour.
— Battlefield (@Battlefield) September 30, 2014
In a blog post earlier this month, EA confirmed a "fairly massive" patch was on its way. Inspired by feedback from players via the Community Test Environment, it's expected to herald a heap of improvements, including tweaks to weapon sighting, player movement, a more streamlined HUD and improvements to player revival.

Latest Wii U Update Offers System-Wide Tweaks and Folder Options
Nintendo has begun to roll out version 5.2.0 of its Wii U operating system, which implements a number of changes, tweaks, and additions.
Chief among the changes is the option to create folders on the console's home page, allowing users to better organise and arrange their software. Meanwhile, a download management icon will now feature on the home screen, giving users a more direct view of their download queue.
Nintendo has also tweaked its quick-start menu--a fairly recent addition to the operating system that allows users to jump into games and applications moments from booting the console, bypassing the Miiverse and homepage. With the latest update the quick-start menu can now be activated in more ways, and certain applications can be removed from it.
The design and layout of its home menu has also been refreshed with various background changes that should enhance system stability.
The changes come ahead of the release of Super Smash Bros for Wii U, which is the latest major Nintendo game to launch on the console. The game's release date has yet to be officially confirmed, but the latest retail leak suggests the game will ship on November 21.

Latest Wii U Update Lets You Organize Software
Version 5.2.0 Update, the latest release of the Wii U system software, is now live and rolls out many changes to the console’s menu system including the ability to create folders.
According to the release notes on the Nintendo support page, the latest update allows users to create folders in the Wii U Menu to organize installed software as they see fit and adds a Download Management icon to the Wii U Menu.
The design and layout of the Home Menu has also been tweaked with the latest roll out and users can now hide software from the Quick Start Menu. The full list of changes introduced with the update follows:

Gore You With The Details: The Evil Within
I have reason to believe that the latest trailer for The Evil Within is directed at a very specific audience. It might even be an audience of one. I share it here just in case the individual in question happens to be reading this website, for it now contains all of the answers he or she will ever need. The person we’re seeking still thinks that The Evil Within will be a subtle and unnerving psychological horror experience, the sort that haunts dreams and takes up residence somewhere under the skin. The rest of us know – and can see final confirmation below – that it is a game in which everything is either bleeding, screaming or wearing its organs on the outside. While exploding.

Cast Announced for Dead Rising: Watchtower
Major spoilers for Season 3 of the TNT reboot of Dallas ahead. Seriously.
The Dead Rising movie has a name, a principle cast and a start date. Dead Rising: Watchtower begins filming tomorrow, September 30, 2014, in Vancouver.
The feature length adaptation of the popular zombie video game series “takes place during a large-scale zombie outbreak. When a mandatory government vaccine fails to stop the infection from spreading, the four leads must evade infection while also pursuing the root of the epidemic, with all signs pointing to a government conspiracy. Politics, public paranoia, and media coverage play an important role in the story’s narrative.” That should sound familiar to fans of Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One.

B.O.B. R055′s Art Lessons In The Rage Of Painting
“Hello and welcome to the show,” says robot Bob Ross. “I’m your host, B.O.B. R055.” Today B.O.B. R055 and I are going to be learning how to draw a black square on a white background.
Now, as someone who used to work in an art store which sold Bob Ross art supplies and videos I must say my memories of non-robot Bob Ross have him muttering his way through paintings of forest trees rather than taking on the work of Malevich. Non-robot Bob Ross also didn’t host The Rage of Painting, nor had he been created as part of a month-long game jam on the Something Awful forums themed around public access television.

Cosmochoria now available on Steam early access
30/30's Cosmochoria, the action roguelike about a naked man with a jet pack planting seeds in space, is now available on Steam early access for Windows, Mac, and Linux after successfully meeting (and exceeding) its Kickstarter goal in May.
In Cosmochoria, the player starts on a lonely planet with a seed to plant and nurture. The plant that springs forth will give the player more seeds which the player may plant on that planet or on another one with the help of their jet pack. It isn't long before aliens start attacking, though if the player grows enough plants on a planet, that planet will give the player life. A given planet can only nourish the player for so long, however, which means the player must explore, seeking out new planets and seeing what the procedurally generated galaxy has to offer.
Since we previewed the game back in February, the game has undergone a number of tweaks and gotten some new content. The game's early access page says that the game is slated for full release in early 2015, with the game's core already in place and a primary focus on additional content going forward. Cosmochoria is currently 10% off of its regular price of $9.99 for launch week, with the regular price slated not to change upon full release. The Wii U version is slated for release early next year.

Punch-O-Spin-A-Gunshoot: Warstache
Russian roulette is a passive-aggressive gunfight, isn’t it? I’ll just leave this revolver here on the table with one bullet in the cylinder, shall I, and it’d be terrible if some idiot were to fire it into their head. Almost as terrible as missing breakfast this morning because I was out of soya milk which is strange because I walked all the way to the Sainsbury’s to buy a new carton only yesterday. Just awful.
Warstache makes Russian roulette actively aggressive. Pummel foes to grab an empty gun, find and load a bullet, spin the chamber, then click-click-click before they can swipe the gun and turn it on you.

Microsoft Designers Create Kinect-Controlled Cube for Music Festival
A team of Microsoft designers and engineers have created a cube that connects people through dance.
Built specifically for the Seattle-based electronic music gathering Decibel Festival, the Cube is an interactive virutal dancing experiment that, according to the designers, doubles as "a canvas for a new type of creative expression."
Powered by several computers, projectors, and four Kinect motion-sensing peripherals, the Cube is a five-sided cube built out of acrylic. Acting much like those attached to Xbox systems, the Kinects within the cube are located on all four sides, projecting the digital avatar of the person standing in front of the side they're facing.

Twin Systems: Starpoint Gemini 2
This is the year in which I finally fulfilled my childhood dream by becoming an interest following a man who lives on a space station on Twitter. You might think that would be enough hot space action to satisfy my stellar carvings but you’d be wrong. I’ve got a hankering for space dust that’d make George Jung’s eyes as big as saucers. Thank the lord (or the ancient precursor race that seeded this planet) that we are living through a space game renaissance. It’s possible that Elite: Dangerous, once complete, will satisfy all cravings but perhaps some Starpoint Gemini 2 will provide sustenance in the meantime?

A Light In Chorus: A Case In Points
Spending just half a day at EGX meant a whistle-stop tour of Things Which Are Eyecatching And Pip You Have Destiny At Home GET OUT OF THAT QUEUE IMMEDIATELY. That’s how A Light In Chorus pinged back onto my radar, in the Leftfield Collection section curated by David Hayward.
A Light in Chorus is a point cloud exploration affair at present. Alas, enthusing about point clouds tends to net you a lot of blank looks from friends in the pub so the more accessible explanation is “the objects and landscape are made from clouds of little light particles – it’s like walking through a sculpture park made from fireflies”.
