Mario Maker May Launch Later Than We Expected

Mario Maker, the Wii U game that will allow players to create their own Mario levels, may arrive later than we've expected.

The game was scheduled to release in the first half of 2015 when it was first announced at E3 2014, and is still listed with that release window on Nintendo's site. However, Nintendo's recent earnings release for the nine-month period that ended on December 2014 includes a list of the company's upcoming games and launch dates, which now shows Mario Maker with the less specific release date of "2015."

Project Guard, legendary Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto's experimental tower-defense game that relies heavily on the Wii U gamepad, which was also scheduled to release in the first half of 2015, no has a "2015" release date as well.

For more on Project Guard, check out our hands-on impression of the game from E3, and for more on Mario Maker, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Watch Star Citizen Devs Talk Wormholes, In-Game AR, and Much More

Last week, Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games held its 2015 Town Hall presentation at PAX South, where it discussed various aspects of the space sim at length. Yesterday, Cloud Imperium uploaded videos of the presentation to YouTube, where you can watch the developers discuss the game's wormholes, persistent universe, and much more.

In the first part of the persistent universe presentation (above), you can see some early NPC character models, and early concept footage of what jump point navigation will look like. It also includes footage of Star Citizen's in-game AR, MobiGlas. It's a functional, contextual interface solution for shopping, accessing information, and any other part of the game where you'd need a menu or head-up display (HUD). You can read an exhaustive explanation of the team's plan for MobiGlass on Star Citizen's website.

Overall there's around six hours Star Citizen talk, which you can find in the links below

Star Citizen, which is already the most successful crowdfunded project in history, is now closing in on $72 million, up from $70 million just a week ago.

For more on Star Citizen and Roberts himself, check out part one and part two of GameSpot's interview with the legendary designer.

Square Enix's Project Code Z Is a New, PS4-Exclusive Spelunker

A new Spelunker game, Minna de Spelunker Z, is coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4, publisher Square Enix has announced.

Earlier this week, the Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider publisher launched a teaser website for an upcoming game with the working title "Project Code Z." Today, during the Tokaigi 2015 event in Japan, the company revealed that game is based on the original Spelunker, which was first released in 1983.

These days, you might better recognize Spelunker's gameplay from a more recent popular game it inspired, Spelunky. As you can see in the trailer above, much like Spelunky, Spelunker is a 2D platformer, where you venture into a cave, jump around, climb ropes, and collect treasure.

Minna de Spelunker Z is being developed by Tozai Games and will release in Japan on March 19. It will be free-to-play, and while it's not yet clear how Square Enix plans to monetize it, we can see an inventory system in the trailer where you can equip your character with different items and outfits.

How World of Warcraft Got its Groove Back

World of Warcraft’s a curious creature. In the 10 years it’s been around, Blizzard’s MMO has been a genre-defining prodigy, an out-of-touch relic, and everything in between. From Leeroy Jenkins to the birth of the word “pwn”, WoW even managed to transcend video gaming and enter the world of popular culture proper. The last few years, however, have seen a slow but steady decline in subscriber numbers, with a lot of former players inexplicably keen to see the game’s demise. The release of Warlords of Draenor seems to have reversed everything, with former players returning at an impressive rate and subscriptions rising above the 10 million mark for the first time since the September 2012 launch of Mists of Pandaria.

Zombies! They’re everywhere these days. Shambling up and down the road, moaning about something or other in those inaudible voices, causing long queues for the teller at your local bank. That sort of thing. They’re a menace and there’s just too many of them on the streets. It’s enough to make one long for the days when a human’s brains were their own concern.

Still, despite our zombie glut there’s still unlife in the concept yet. Now you too can put this to the test with a demo for Dead State [official site], courtesy of DoubleBear Productions.

Opinion: Hype Isn’t Always a Bad Thing – Hype is Hope

Hype's gotten a bad rap.

True, things can definitely get out of control when frothy-mouthed marketers promise life-changing miracles to get all of us to take notice of a game nearing release. We all know the dangers of over-hype – and yes, we’re all a little guilty of sometimes getting a little too caught up in the excitement. To be perfectly clear, I do not mean to defend flagrantly false or misleading advertising, and I certainly do not recommend that you pre-order games on blind faith. After all, if people don’t wait for reviews before buying games, I’m out of a job as IGN’s reviews editor. You should absolutely always wait until reviews are in and gameplay footage is available before throwing money at a game, no matter what’s been said ahead of launch.

Supreme League of Patriots Review

Deconstructing superhero mythology can be a joyful way of both celebrating and lampooning comic book culture in video games, which makes the uneven Supreme League of Patriots something of a trojan horse of social commentary. It turns the origin of a real superhero into a three-episode attack on Republicans that, even as a liberal, had me cringing at its non-stop bashing. The clever puzzles, while occasionally frustrating, are a highlight, but even they may not be enough to keep you playing through this verbose comedic adventure’s non-superheroic antics.

Playable character Kyle Keever is a lovable dimwit who identifies as lefty, but through a series of mishaps while auditioning for the reality TV show America’s Got Superpowers, transforms into the Purple Patriot, an ultra-conservative jingoist, chauvinist, and homophobe. I think we’re meant to laugh at his offensive observations and actions, but the overbearing, meandering dialogue rarely allows the humor to stick. The best lines are delivered by Melvin, the Purple Patriot’s liberal best friend and sidekick, whose only superpower is a droll British sense of humor. Listening to the duo riff off each other like a superheroic Sam and Max can be amusing, but the punchlines often get lost in the hyper-partisan tirades. Even when the adventure makes jabs at liberals, the outcome is more offensive than funny, such as the inclusion of a flamboyant gay superhero who wears makeup, leather, and high heels or the racist-tinged poster of Barack Obama in the third episode that declares he’s “wanted by the Kenyan embassy.”

Is Oderus Urungus the Next Mortal Kombat X Character?

Metal fans are petitioning to have late GWAR singer Dave Brockie immortalized as a playable character in Mortal Kombat X.

Pictured below as his on-stage character, Oderus Urungus, he sort of looks like a mixture of Shao Kahn and Baraka. The petition has nearly 3,700 signatures, and its creator, "Boston Brand," is aiming for 5,000. From the petition page:

"People who are familiar with GWAR know Oderus Urungus, (played by Dave Brockie) the former singer of the band, unfortunately passed away last March. Oderus was as hilarious as he was viscous, and also one of the most colorful and creative characters not only in rock history, but also history in general. Though his music will live on, what better way would there be to further immortalize (toasty) Oderus Urungus then to have him be a playable character on Mortal Kombat X."

Have You Played… Mini Metro?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

None-more-minimalist railway management game (or is it?) Mini Metro is relatively new (I last wrote about it in August, even), but it’s tended to hum away in the background rather than ever quite find the limelight, so permit me to praise it anew. When it comes down to it, railways (in this case, underground ones) are lines, right? Whoever’s designed them thus surely worries primarily about lines.* Someone else can sort out the money and the elevators and the timetables: the railway designer’s job is devise the most efficient route between A and B, and then again to C, D, E, F, G, H and oh come on, you know what I mean, I don’t have to write out the whole alphabet, do I?

Over $57 Million Paid Out To Steam Workshop Creators

It's the Steam logo.

$57 million US is a lot of money. So’s $58 million, but I mention $57m specifically because that’s how much Valve have paid out since 2011 to folks who made and sold in-game items for their games. It’s over $57 million dollars from hats, knives, guns, staves, and swords across TF2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. And those last two games only sell cosmetic items. And that’s after Valve have taken their cut. Crumbs!

Now non-Valve games can join in. The first games opening up a ‘curated’ Steam Workshop bringing items to sale are Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Dungeon Defenders Eternity.

Game Dev Bets Big With This Super Bowl Ad

As it turns out, Bud Light's Pac-Man commercial won't be the only video game-related ad shown during this weekend's Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Boutique game developer uCool has announced that it will air a 15-second commercial for its mobile card game Heroes Charge during the big game. You can watch the ad above.

uCool apparently submitted its ad to Super Bowl broadcaster NBC late in the game, so the network has not yet said during which quarter the ad will air.

This year's Super Bowl is expected to draw more than 100 million views. uCool's marketing officer Tony Cerrato said the opportunity to showcase the game on such a wide scale was too big a chance to pass up, even if ad rates are $4.5 million for 30 seconds.

"Players seem to love our game," Cerrato told AdWeek. "We're getting good responses from that, and we figured that by going on to a bigger venue like the Super Bowl, it should be successful."

uCool's other properties include PC games such as Tynon, Evony, and Commanders of Evony. Heroes Charge, released in October 2014, is the company's first mobile game.

Metroid Prime Trilogy Out Now on Wii U

The acclaimed Metroid Prime Trilogy is now available on Wii U across Europe and North America, and for the first week Nintendo is offering the digital re-release at half price.

The Retro Studios-developed first person adventure games, the first of which GameSpot described as "not just one of the single most atmospheric games ever created, but it's also quite simply one of the best," is available for $10 in the US and £9 in the UK. Next week the trilogy will return to its usual listing price of $20 and £18.

This offer marks the third re-release of Wii games on Nintendo's Wii U platform, following the listings of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Punch-Out.

While Wii game discs can play on the Wii U, users need to enter the console's emulator in order to play them. These re-releases remove that barrier, and also offer 1080p output.

More re-releases are in the pipeline, such as the Wii edition of Sin and Punishment. A Wii Remote and Nunchuk is required to play.

Sega to Axe 300 Jobs as Focus Turns to PC and Mobile

A drastic and sweeping restructure is underway at Sega as the publisher attempts to "drastically improve profitability," with more than 300 jobs at risk, a headquarter relocation underway, and a new focus away from games consoles.

Sega issued a notice to investors on Friday explaining that it expects to make just $34 million in net profit by the end of the financial year; a nosedive in performance compared to the $260 million it made the year prior.

Around 300 staff are scheduled to be made redundant, while Sega's San Francisco headquarters will be relocated--likely by summer--to southern California.

[Update: Sega Europe has issued a statement to GameSpot suggesting that its development teams, such as Sports Interactive and The Creative Assembly, might not be affected by the consultation process. Though the details were not explicitly clear at this early stage, Sega Europe has suggested that the focus of the downsizing is on the publishing business.

“We are under consultation with a limited number of staff in the European publishing business and will be able to confirm decisions regarding any potential redundancies in the coming weeks.” Update Ends]

The struggling publisher, which formed in the 1940s and shifted its business into video games by the late '80s, will also reposition its business to center it around "smartphone and PC online gaming."

Although drastic measures, Sega has been planning this shift in business since May 2014. To what extent this will further narrow its games console business is unclear. Sega's key releases of 2014 were Alien: Isolation, Rome 2 Total War, and Sonic Boom.

The corporation said: "SEGA has positioned Digital Games, particularly smartphone and PC online gaming, as a growth area and has determined to implement the following measures in order to constantly post profits by improving management efficiency while promptly promoting redistribution of management resources."

IGN UK Podcast #265: Bearded Monsters From Below

Be warned, there is a lot of facial hair on this week's podcast. Gav, the most hirsute member of IGN UK, can only play second-fiddle to the bearded magnificence of Phil Robb, co-founder of Turtle Rock Studios and creative director of Evolve. Phil joins Gav and Alex to answer your questions about the upcoming monster-hunter mash-up, from who's the hardest, Goliath or Behemoth, to how all-American support gunner Hank is a British favourite while proper nutjob Hyde tops the hunter chart in the US.

The three amigos also recount the hottest games and movies around at the moment, plus talk about how the once mighty Broadchurch appears to have lost its mojo in season two.

So without further ado, m'lord, let the trial begin!

A… Match 3 App? Evolve Makes Things So Complicated

noooooooooooooo

I really want to like Evolve (official site). I’ve dabbled a little in the beta, and while it doesn’t have anything like the character or tension of Left 4 Dead, a whole lot about it felt good. I just can’t say the same of what’s happening outside the game. There’s been too much focus on too much DLC before the game’s even with us, and now it turns out there’s a match-3 companion game for telephones, which will accelerate progress in the game proper. It’s free, but you can pay real money to boost your progress in the mobile game. Which will then boost your progress in the main game. And. Well. No. God. Why.

Sometimes a guy just wants to hunt a monster/pretend to be a monster. Why can’t it be that simple any more?

The Internet Did It – The Indigo Prophecy Remastered

murder victims who don't scream: the bane of local police

Of all the games to remaster, why this? Of all the games to remaster, this, yes, this, of course. What a thing it is, the action-adventure-murder-mystery-conspiracy-everything game we called Fahrenheit back when it was first released in Britain a decade ago, though you over-ponders insisted on calling it The Indigo Prophecy. And what a talking point David Cage/Quantic Dream’s 2005 oddity was, back when I was part of Bath’s game journalist illuminati.* Its incredible escape-from-a-murder-scene first section, its… troubling depiction of its main black character, its ridiculous sex scenes, its wildly over-zealous quicktime event conceits, its spiralling descent in utter lunacy. How we loved it. How we loved to talk about it, anyway. Little did we know what it would lead to. Little did we know what David Cage games would become.

And now it’s back. Remastered. Out now. Why? Why not?

Freeware Garden: Echoes +

I am certain I have run into quite a few commercial arena shooters that couldn’t hold a candle to Echoes +. It might work as a replacement for Waves, which is an absolutely excellent game, but one that I’ve been playing for far too long. A new, tense, addictive, glowy shmup was something I needed.

New Hearthstone Adventure Coming April, Report Claims

Hearthstone's next single-player expansion is expected to go live in April, according to a new report with details from a purported insider at Blizzard.

An article by Yahoo Finance contributor, Tae Kim, suggests that the new Hearthstone content update will be "PVE focused", which suggests it will be a similar proposition to the Naxxramas update that shipped in July.

These single-player expansions pit players against toughened AI, and if Naxxramas is any indication, against heroes who use unique cards and abilities to swing the game to their advantage.

Blizzard has declined to comment on the rumours.

Tae Kim, who says his information comes from am employee at Activision Blizzard, also claims that Hearthstone's user numbers have rocketed since September, when it was revealed that the game had accumulated some 20 million players. Since then, the collectable card game has expanded with Android support, as well as the major Goblins vs Gnomes expansion.

According to the alleged Blizzard employee, the game has now surpassed 75 million players. The user numbers were described as "off the charts."

Meanwhile, it's claimed that the Hearthstone team is "also experimenting with a 2 vs 2 version". It's not clear whether this means two heroes versus two, or a pair of players sharing command of a single hero.

GameSpot has contacted Blizzard for further clarification and comment.

Hearthstone won GameSpot's Mobile Game of the Year award in December, and was a nominee for overall Game of the Year.

Pulp Your Own Milk: Minecraft Mod Adds Vegan Options

This is what you'll craft with, eat, and sleep on.

‘Indie milk’, I called it. In search of the tastiest dairy alternative during a vegan spell a while back, I gulped the diluted pulp of rice, coconut, almond, hazelnut, oat, hemp, and more – even soy, because hey, it might be pretty much mainstream by now but only a jerk thinks they’re too good for pop milk. I like the idea of new Minecraft mod The Vegan Option, adding crafting alternatives free of animal products for everything from dye to armour, but as an indie milk aficionado I had to know: what is the drink it calls ‘plant milk’?

Pumpkin milk. You make your own pumpkin milk from seeds. Damn, that’s pretty hardcore.
