If You Like Descent, Watch This Trailer for 6DoF Shooter Sublevel Zero
If you miss Descent's aerial first-person gameplay, you'll want to keep an eye out for Sublevel Zero, a new six-degree-of-freedom shooter.
If you haven't played Descent before, it's a lot like other straightforward first-person shooters from the '90s, only you're in a spaceship, so you're able to fly around the level, stop on a dime, turn in any direction, and change course very quickly.
Developer Sigtrap describes the game as a roguelike shooter set in a universe where reality is falling apart. You'll take control over a gunship and travel through a procedurally-generated labyrinth, solving puzzles, collecting artifacts, and fighting enemies. The developer added that the game is focused on survival, with little ammunition that will make you carefully approach every enemy encounter.
“Sublevel Zero has been inspired by our favorite games of our formative years like Descent, Forsaken and modern shooters like Teleglitch," Sigtrap designer Luke Thompson said.
Sublevel Zero will launch summer 2015 for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux.

Warhammer 40,000: Dark Nexus Arena Mixes Twin Stick Shooters and MOBAs
Games Workshop and developer Whitebox Interactive have announced Warhammer 40,000: Dark Nexus Arena, a new multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Whitebox Interactive describes the game as a blend of the twin stick shooter and MOBA genres. Players will go into battles in teams of four, choosing "Veteran warriors" from the Space Marine, Ork, and Tay factions. Players will also be able to customize their characters with different wargrear and special abilities. Eldar, Dark Eldar, Chaos Space Marines and other factions you'll recognize from the original tabletop game or many of its video game adaptations will be added to Dark Nexus Arena in the future.
Whitebox Interactive says that it's been working on the game since 2012, even before it officially partnered with Games Workshop, which owns the right to Warhammer 40,000.
"We are thrilled to be working with Games Workshop to launch the first MOBA in the Warhammer 40,000 universe," CEO of Whitebox Interactive Jonathan Falkowski said. "We are hard-core MOBA players with a shared passion for the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property here at Whitebox. Our aim is to deliver a highly-polished experience that a player of any skill level can step into and find success and enjoyment."
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Nexus is set to launch on PC in 2016.

House of Cards Season 3 Keeps the Video Game References Coming
House of Cards protagonist Frank Underwood is a fan of video games, and his hobby doesn't take a backseat in the recently premiered third season.
Earlier in the series, Underwood--played by Kevin Spacey--expresses his delight in seeing a PlayStation Vita in a moment that felt a lot like paid product placement. Later, he's seen playing Call of Duty against other people. online (After Spacey starred in Advanced Warfare, there was some talk of having him play it on the show.)
Now, in the third season, he's spending time on an iPad playing the critically acclaimed Monument Valley. And lest you think the appearance was paid for, developer Ustwo has denied that is the case, stating on Twitter, "People have been asking, so we can confirm that MV appearing on House of Cards wasn't paid product placement, just a cool collaboration."
That isn't the extent of the video game talk in season three. As Polygon reports, a video game reviewer--the fictional Thomas Yates--is hired to write Underwood's biography during the course of the show, and the subject of his reviews come up.
Underwood notes that he "tend[s] to play shoot 'em ups" while shying away from indie games. However, Yates' review of Monument Valley prompts Underwood to give it a try, which is why we see him playing it--and it's why he wants Yates (whom he deems a good writer) to pen his biography. Underwood is also later exposed to The Stanley Parable, another game that doesn't fit in the shooter category.
Season three of House of Cards is available for streaming now through Netflix.

See Hints Of The Prisoner In Contrast Devs’ We Happy Few
We Happy Few [official site] brings The Prisoner to mind. It’s set in an odd, colourful urban area where everyone is behaving strangely and some weird omniscient character sure is trying to keep you eye on you. While nonconformity in the classic English spy-fi show mostly got Patrick McGoohan a good gassing or drugging, it looks like We Happy Few’s protagonist will be met with a little more violence. I’d rather be bopped with a nice big ballon than be twatted with a shovel.
It’s the next game from Contrast developers Compulsion Games, the one they’d teased with talk of masks, drugs, and memory loss. Here, tell me this trailer it’s not Prisoner-ish:

Wasteland 2 Getting a Visual "Facelift" as Post-Release Plans Expand
Not satisfied with the game it released last year, InXile Entertainment continues to deliver updates for its crowdfunded RPG, Wasteland 2. Now, the developer has announced that it's expanding upon its original plans for post-release support, part of which will come in the form of a visual "facelift" for the game.
Having recently released the sixth big patch for Wasteland 2, InXile has outlined some of its plans for what to do next. "Part of the newfound freedom we’ve gained from being an exclusively crowdfunded company is that it allows us to offer a high level of post-release support," wrote project lead Chris Keenan in a Kickstarter update. "While this is normal practice for an active multiplayer game, we believe that the ongoing improvements to the single-player experience in Wasteland 2 are worth the time and money. The game truly continues to be a passion project for the team here at InXile."
Keenan then went on to reveal that InXile's plans have changed--for the better. "If you've been keeping a close eye on things, you might have heard tell that we're looking at doing some more balancing and improvements of Wasteland 2 in the future," he said. "We have expanded our original plan and decided that this is going to be a part of something much larger for all our fans."
Not many details were offered, but InXile did reveal the game's codebase is being moved from Unity 4.5 to Unity 5. As far as players are concerned, the benefits of that include better tools being made available for modders, as well as new technology that will allow for improved graphics.
"Let's just say that the Orange County lifestyle might be getting to us as the game will be receiving a facelift," Keenan said. "Unity 5 offers physically based shading, which is already starting to look amazing in the scenes we've touched up.
"As well as visual improvements, we have quite a few quirky tricks up our sleeves. The character system is getting perked up and will include some new elements to modify gameplay. Of course, more details will be released in the future so stay tuned!"
Wasteland 2 was released last September on PC, Mac, and Linux. It's the sequel to the original Wasteland from 1988, meaning it took more than a quarter of a century for the classic game--it inspired the Fallout series--to get a proper follow-up.

Subverting The Nazis: Alternative Hearts Of Iron Playstyles
Hearts of Iron [official site] is the one Paradox grand strategy series that I’ve been unable to befriend. Partly that’s because it’s a more guided experience, a game about a specific war rather than a historical sandbox and it’s partly because of the micromanagement involved in production and resource chains. Hearts of Iron IV might change that, with its cleverly streamlined factory operations and improved minor nations. More on that later this week.
First of all, I wanted to discuss the difficulty of playing the bad guys.

What If Steam Never Existed?
Ten years ago, you’d struggle to find fifteen retail PC games released in any given month – and fourteen of them would launch with bugs, never be patched, and sink without trace. Compare and contrast with today, where Brewsters’ Millions could be spent in the time it took to load the Steam store. The existence of Steam isn’t entirely the cause for our videogame abundance, but it’s certainly a large factor – along with an influence, for good and ill, on almost every other part of PC games culture.
But what if it had never existed? You be Jimmy Stewart-playing-Gabe Newell and I’ll be Clarence, your guardian angel and guide to this alternate reality.

Nintendo Isn't the Only One Making Use of Wii U/3DS Cross-Buy Support
Nintendo won't be the only publisher with a game that offers cross-buy support when the feature becomes available on Wii U and 3DS in March.
When it launches next week, OlliOlli will become the first third-party game with Nintendo cross-buy support. Whether you purchase the Wii U or 3DS version, you'll be given access to the skateboarding game on both systems, publisher Curve Digital announced on Twitter today.
Having been available for quite some time on PlayStation systems (not to mention mobile platforms), cross-buy support is something Nintendo fans have requested for years. Back in January, Nintendo finally announced plans to introduce the feature this March with downloadable puzzle game Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars. However, it was unclear how common this practice would become, as cross-buy was described as being a "special offer."
OlliOlli, which debuted on PS Vita in January 2014 before later releasing on PC, PS3, and PS4, comes to Wii U and 3DS on March 5. (An Xbox One release is also happening in March, as is the release of OlliOlli 2 on PS4 and Vita.) For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review.

Electric Dreams, Part 2: Optimists At Heart
“There’s an undiscovered country of possibilities out there that we need to explore and create.”
It’s Monday morning on the first day of Dagstuhl Seminar 15051: “Artificial and Computational Intelligence in Games: Integration” and Michael Mateas is talking about impossible games. You might remember Mateas from the first Electric Dreams article – he was one of the scientific researchers behind Facade, a groundbreaking games experiment in interactive drama and artificial intelligence. Nowadays he runs the Expressive Intelligence Studio at UC Santa Cruz, a nexus of the world’s best and soon-to-be-best games researchers. This January around fifty games researchers, including Michael and myself, came together in Germany for a week to talk about the future of our field and to work together to discuss some of the biggest research questions we’re facing right now.
Last time on Electric Dreams we talked about the history of artificial intelligence in the games industry. In this second part I want to talk about the present day, and what scientific research has to do with all of this. I’m going to try to shed some light on why I think games research is broken and not benefitting games as well as it could be – but I also want to end on a positive note, and introduce you to the wonderful people and research that is going on right now around the world.

Watch Resident Evil: Revelations 2's Episode 2 Teaser
Having debuted earlier this week, Capcom has published the Episode Two teaser video awaiting those who complete the first episode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2.
If you're waiting to play the episodic series--perhaps until the full season is completed next month--but are eager to get a taste of what awaits, the video above should more than suffice. It's got a distinctly TV show-y feel to it, and while it isn't the most spoiler-filled video possible, you'll obviously want to avoid it if you're the sort of person that wants to go in completely fresh.
Episode One was released earlier this week on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC to some acclaim, with its cooperative modes in particular being praised by many. Unfortunately, players on PC discovered co-op support (which is limited to local play only for now) is absent from that version despite Capcom's official listings suggesting otherwise. The publisher has since apologized for the mistake and explained that the feature was removed to "ensure a stable user experience across a variety of different PC settings and devices."
Episode Two is set for release next week, with the following two episodes scheduled for the following two weeks. Once the season is fully released through digital channels, a retail version with bonus content will then be released in March.

This is How GTA V Will Look on PC
Rockstar has release 14 new hi-res screens for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V, showing the refinement and subtle touches to the graphical presentation of the upcoming release.
The screens paint a variety of locations across Lo Santos, in the wilderness, through the city, on golf courses and on the waterfront. The screens show finer detail and richer textures than earlier incarnations, and creative touches that present the upcoming release's graphical standards:
The PC version of GTA V was recently delayed again, this time until April 14 for both digital and retail. Rockstar said this was a decision made to ensure the game's quality at release, and that anyone who pre-orders before March 31 will receive an extra $300,000 of in-game cash; that's on top of the existing pre-order bonus.

Twitch Plays Halo (Not Very Well)
Bungie's classic shooter Halo: Combat Evolved has become the latest game to join the "Twitch Plays..." phenomenon. This one, however, is different than what we've seen before.
Games featured in past Twitch Plays videos have included titles like Pokemon and early Legend of Zelda games, which are more basic in nature than Halo. In the case of Pokemon, users were actually even able to beat the game. But that may not happen for Halo.
Bungie's game, of course, is set in a 3D environment. As such, chat users must not only move Master Chief around obstacles, but also aim, shoot, and fire weapons to kill enemies. When hundreds of people are triggering commands at once, this leads to some pretty hilarious--and painful--results.
Twitch Plays Halo has been running for more than 20 hours now, but progress has been slow. At the time of writing, users were trying to get Master Chief across a pretty narrow bridge. Watch the video above to see how things are shaping up now.

After the disappointment of Arkham’s Oranges, I was relieved to hear the makers of Asylum and City were back on the case. Ex-Darksiders Devs Are Bringing Back Battle Chasers
Vigil Games co-founders Joe Madureira and Ryan Stefanelli have formed a new studio and are planning to resurrect a classic comic franchise as part of their first project.
They've opted to use Madureira's classic comic series Battle Chasers as the source material for their next project, which will include both a comic and a new video game set in the same universe.
Called Airship Syndicate, the new studio in Austin, Texas will handle the development of Battle Chasers' upcoming game. It is still very much in its early stages, but Stefanelli claims it will be "classic and old school but presented with some new modern twists."
Vigil Games was best known for its development of the Darksiders series. Although the new Battle Chasers game will be very different mechanically from the action RPGs, Stefanelli told Polygon they will "make sure that the dungeon exploration side of the game is soaked with lots of fun adventurous elements."

Every now and then, like for instance whenever we communicate, Kieron Gillen and I disagree about things. One of the things we both think the other is most wrong about is Limbo. Kieron wrongly thinks it’s an unfair game, echoing the failings of Rick Dangerous and its ilk by forcing you to fail. I rightly think it was a statement, an expression through these enforced failures, that crafts a uniquely interesting experience.
