Vita Owners Have Another Visual Novel to Look Forward To

Amnesia: Memories, the latest visual novel from publisher Idea Factory, will be making its way to PlayStation Vita owners in the west this coming August.

The game's interactive story puts you in the shoes of a girl who, like the title implies, has lost her memory. A "mysterious spirit" named Orion enters the picture, promising to help the main character regain what has since been forgotten.

Coincidentally, our heroine finds herself surrounded by five men she must hide her amnesia from. Players will be able to choose one of the five to romance, opening up a number of branching paths that ultimately lead to over 20 different endings. Along the way, you'll engage in touch-based mini games and make conversation decisions that direct the flow of the narrative.

Aussie Streaming Services - Which One Is Right For You?

It was only a matter of time before Netflix hit Australian shores. With an estimated 200,000-odd Australian users accessing international Netflix via VPN means prior to its launch Down Under, it was the easiest market research for the company to see that there’s a demand for streaming services in Australia.

Now that Netflix has landed, it’s not the only streaming service on the block and not even close to being the first. In fact, short of another mysterious streaming service appearing over the coming months, Netflix is the most recent streaming service to land in Australia and, depending on what you want from a streaming service, it may not even be the best option.

We’ve weighed up all of the streaming services to give you a comprehensive understanding of which service offers what and, ultimately, which one is right for you. Given that Netflix is to streaming services what an iPod is to MP3 players, we’ll start with the big name that’s synonymous with streaming video and use it as the measurement tool for everything else.

Dark Souls II Bug Caused By High Frame Rate Getting Fixed, Developer Says

Dark Souls II has suffered from a pretty terrible bug caused by the higher frame rate the game can hit on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, and it's still in the game today.

Weapon durability in Dark Souls II is tied to frame rate, so getting 60 frames-per-second means weapons degrade much faster than they would when playing with 30 frames-per-second. Only recently did publisher Bandai Namco say that it's working on a fix for this issue.

“The fix will be issued for PS4, Steam and Xbox One, and will be apparent for people running the game at 60fps as the durability decrease rate is linked to the frame rate,” Bandai Namco told Kotaku. “We are still working on the exact release date for the patch, which will also fix additional issues not just durability, and will follow up with the date as soon as possible."

Hopefully Bandai Namco releases the patch sooner rather than later, because Dark Souls II is great otherwise, and worth playing at the higher frame rate. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review of Dark Souls II and its most recent DLC, Scholar of the First Sin.

Guitar Master Beats Bloodborne With Rock Band Controller

Bloodborne is a challenging game even under the best conditions, so imagine how hard it would be to finish using nothing but a Rock Band guitar controller.

That's just what a player named Benjamin "Bearzly" Gwin recently accomplished. You can watch his entire "Guitarborne" run archived on his Twitch channel, or you can just watch him take on one of the most challenging fights in the game in the YouTube video above.

"I used a 'Titan One' to use my Xbox 360 Rock Band 1 guitar on a PS4 and remap the controls," Gwin said. "There are a couple issues with PS4 support but overall I was very impressed with it!

If this all sounds a little familiar, it's probably because you've seen Gwin pull off a similar stunt before. Last year, he used a Rock Band guitar to beat Dark Souls as well.

According to the latest report from the NPD on physical video game sales in the US, Bloodborne, which is exclusive to the PlayStation 4, was the second best selling game during March. It came in right behind Battlefield Hardline, which was released on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

The Sunday Papers

Sundays are for drawing polygons then rotating them in code, for no good reason. Best justify the time that’ll take by first gathering the week’s best writing about videogames.

  • Star Wars: Galaxies was a fascinating game at launch, one which treated the world of Star Wars as a real place and went to great pains to offer more than simply a power fantasy. That’s why people still remember it so fondly and also, I suspect, why it never found lasting commercial success. Raph Koster, one of the game’s designers, wrote this past week about how they dealt with the game’s Jedi problem. As in, how do you make a multiplayer game where everyone wants to be the game-breaking superhero class? I’m fond of one, unused solution, quoted below.

Mortal Kombat X Patch 1.02 Out Now, Includes New Skins, Gameplay Changes

NetherRealm has released patch 1.02 for its fighting game Mortal Kombat X, the developer has announced.

The patch includes new costumes for a few fighters, including a classic skin for the ice-wielding ninja Sub-Zero. More importantly, the patch makes a few gameplay changes, which are listed below.

  • General - Throws (regular or command grabs) will no longer sometimes connect on a grounded reacting opponent off a counter hit

  • Shinnok (Impostor) - He can now control the location of a stolen Goro Stomp.

  • Subzero (Grandmaster) - Combos on a grounded opponent frozen by the Ice Klone will now scale properly.

  • Takeda (Ronin) - Added a new move “Quick Kall” (Down, Towards, Front Punch) which quickly returns a dropped blade without doing an attack.

  • Takeda (Shirai Ryu) – He will now always teleport to the other side when doing the Air Shirai Ryu Port

In case you missed it, yesterday NeatherRealm released a patch on PC that fixed several issues, and granted an extra 10,000 Krypt Koins to all PC players for their patience on launch day.

On Twitter, NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon said that the patch should also improve performance on PC.

Mortal Kombat X launched earlier this week, and though he didn't share specific numbers, according to Boone it was the biggest launch in the franchise's history.

Mortal Kombat X is currently available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and mobile devices. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game have been delayed and will arrive this summer.

Watch Co-Op Footage From Alienation, a PS4-Exclusive From Resogun Developer

We haven't seen Alienation since Gamescom 2014, but the top-down shooter is looking pretty good in a recently released video.

The video, posted to developer Housemarque Games' YouTube channel shows an early pre-alpha, three player cooperative session. It's still a work in progress, but Alienation seems like a mix of two of Housemarque's previous games. On its website, Housemarque describes Alienation as a spiritual successor to the top-down zombie shooter Dead Nation, and it does seem to share similar characters and level design, but it also looks like it has the fast pace action and weapon types of Super Stardust HD.

Alienation is a four-player action game with drop-in drop-out multiplayer exclusive to the PlayStation 4. It will have cooperative, single player, and player-versus-player modes. Housemarque has yet to announce a release date, but the game's official site says it's "coming soon." Sony also previously confirmed the game for a 2015 release.

Project Cars Has 110 Courses, 30 Locations at Launch

Realistic racing game Project Cars will have 110 courses and 30 locations at launch, developer Slightly Mad Studios has announced.

The courses and locations are based on real tracks from around the world, including famous spots like Nürburgring in Germany, Zhuhai International Circuit in China, Chesterfield in the United Kingdom, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.

Most locations will have multiple layouts for different types of races, which is how Project Cars reaches the impressive 110 courses mark. The California State Route 1, for example, has five different configurations.

You can find the full list of courses and locations on Project Cars' website.

Following a succession of delays to the project on at least three occasions, the racing sim is now due to ship in the Americas on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on Friday May 6. The UK market will get the game on May 8.

Developer Slightly Mad Studios has plans to ship a version on Wii U, but details on the release date for this remain vague.

GTA 5's First PC Patch Has Arrived

The first patch for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V has been released, and it resolves a number of issues players have been reporting this week.

The fixes in this patch are truly wide-ranging--they deal with everything from crashes in the launcher and frame rate issues to much stranger things, like birds not flying properly in Rockstar Editor clips and players' eyebrows and facial features being changed when they're transferred to PC.

Patch 1.01 also addresses the bizarre issue that prevents the game from installing and running properly if you have anything but a letter or number in your Windows username. Rockstar offered a workaround for that earlier this week--basically, make a new user account and name it only using letters A-Z and numbers 0-9. If you did so, Rockstar's support website has been updated with details on how to continue your progress from the new Windows account on your old one.

Other problems that continue to exist aren't things Rockstar can necessarily fix--for instance, to not lose your vehicles from the Xbox 360/PS3 versions of GTA Online, you need to log in to the game from that console before initiating the PC transfer process if you haven't played since December 2013. For more details on that, Windows Media Player problems, and other issues, check out our list of workarounds.

Read on for the full list of 1.01 patch notes.

  • Fixed an issue where the GTA V Launcher would use an abnormally high percentage of CPU and sometimes crash

  • Fixed an issue where frame rate would drop when left-clicking the mouse while driving

  • Added a grid to the Golf mini-game to show the topology of the green while putting

  • Fixed an issue where a character’s eyebrows or other facial features could change erroneously when transferred to PC

  • Fixed an issue where a some players were asked to transfer their GTA Online character while a transfer was already in progress

  • YouTube uploads via the Rockstar Editor will now correctly resume if Internet connection is lost during the upload and later restored

  • Fixed a rare issue where the game could crash while using the Rockstar Editor

  • Projects containing deleted clips will now load properly in the Rockstar Editor and warn the player of the missing clips

  • Fixed an issue where birds were not recorded correctly in Rockstar Editor clips

  • Corrected an issue where certain characters in Windows usernames would cause the Launcher to fail to load or other undesired game behavior. For details, see this page.

  • Fixed an issue where players with one garage would not be able to replace an existing vehicle if the garage was full and the new vehicle was purchased from an in-game website

  • Additional fixes to prepare for iFruit support

  • Crew Tire Smoke can no longer be purchased if you are not in a Crew

Weave Your Own Mysteries with StoryStylus

storystylus1.jpg

I don't think there's too many people who love games who haven't dreamed of making their own some day. Daunting as that may be, there are programs and tools that have made that prospect easier. Twine has opened up a lot of opportunities for fiction writers, bringing the interactivity of games to traditional storytelling. RPG Maker has also helped many budding devs create their own turn-based RPGs or other gameplay experiences. StoryStylus is looking to to help point-and-click and mystery realize their own visions, allowing creative individuals to build their own webs of intrigue and set up their own complex plots, characters, and settings.

storystylus2.jpg

StoryStylus is looking to offer ways to plug in character and setting art, set up dialogue trees, create important in-game items and clues, and even develop consequence or rapport systems to help track player connections to the characters. It is also built with the new developer in mind, with easy-to-use systems that offer tutorials while you plug in the information you need to make the game your own. Don't constrain yourself to just mysteries, though, as the tool is open to any other genre the creator can conceive of. We've seen some terrifying horror and some touching stories come out of RPG Maker and Twine, so I'm very curious to see what will come from using StoryStylus.

storystylus3.jpg

Developer One More Story Games wants to create the next great program for new point-and-click developers, one that's open for those of us who get nervous when thinking of all the complexities that go into game development. With a team of experienced developers and storytellers (including former CEO of Her Interactive, developers of the incredibly popular Nancy Drew point-and-click games), StoryStylus hopes to open point-and-click development up to even more groups of creative people than ever before. If you've got a great, twisting story percolating in the back of your head, you may want to get yourself ready to put it together.

For more information on StoryStylus and One More Story Games, you can head to the developer's site or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, Google +, and Twitter. You can also contribute to the game's development through Kickstarter.

Postal 2 Gets Paradise Lost Expansion After 12 Years

Twelve years after its release, first-person shooter Postal 2 is getting an expansion.

Developer Running With Scissors’ Postal 2: Paradise Lost is currently listed on Steam. Paradise Lost features a full single player campaign with new weapons, items, and abilities, like dual-wielding guns.

Sticking with the dark humor of Postal 2, players can peacefully go about their daily routine in a non-linear world, doing chores or players can create havoc in stages ranging from Arid Desert to Nuclear Winter. The Dude will battle bandits, doomsday survivalists, and toy mascots or ally himself with former child star Gary Coleman (who appeared in the previous game) and demons.

Kicking Ass With The Witcher 3's Complex Combat

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt gives you plenty of opportunities to solve problems without violence, but when things go south, Geralt’s swordplay ends up as a tense, entertaining alternative to talking it out.

Combat in The Witcher 3 is, as expected, considerably improved over The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which shed the original game’s rhythmic slicing and dicing in favor of more action-oriented engagements. It worked, but The Witcher 2 was hard, meaning players had to rely heavily on dodge-rolling before mashing the attack buttons. In The Witcher 3, evasion is equally important during challenging combat encounters. The way in which you let loose on some poor soldier, drowner, or griffon, though, requires the sort of care, patience, and precision usually reserved for Dark Souls or Bloodborne.

New Star Wars: Battlefront Gameplay Details Released, Trailer Coming Soon

Watch the Star Wars: Battlefront Panel Right Here

Why Battlefront Isn't Just a Battlefield Clone

Shortly after Star Wars: Battlefront's E3 reveal, DICE's Patrick Bach told IGN it wouldn't be a Battlefield game. At Star Wars Celebration this week, we asked the studio why, exactly, this isn't just a re-skin of the iconic multiplayer series.

"It’s not a Battlefield in a number of ways," Producer Craig Mcleod told IGN. "We’ve built this game from the ground up."

First up, Battlefront supports 40 players. "64 players is Battlefield," Mcleod said. "That’s what worked for them. When developing the best gameplay experience, we tried all sorts of numbers, but we found that 40 players delivers the best experience for the universe. We didn’t want to use an arbitrary number that would lessen the experience. We have a range of modes that affect the experience, all the way down to eight players for a more intimate experience."

Fly the Falcon, Hunt as Darth Vader in Star Wars: Battlefront

Similar to Star Wars: Battlefront 2, DICE’s upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront will give players the opportunity to play as iconic heroes, villains, and vehicles in the middle of multiplayer matches.

During a gameplay demo at Star Wars Celebration, Darth Vader appeared in an Endor Bunker, wielding his lightsaber and deflecting Rebel blaster shots, and choked an enemy before hurling him into a wall. Boba Fett brings his blaster and jetpack to the battlefield, as well. DICE also told IGN that the Millennium Falcon -- and perhaps other iconic space craft -- can join in on aerial combat.

Each hero unit "has traits that are unique to them," DICE General Manager Patrick Bach explained. "You want to become the boss of the battle. You want to be the first thing everyone wants to take down, because you’re super powerful. If someone spawns on the other side as a hero, there will be a clash of giants, of sorts."

Battlefront Does Not Have Space Battles, Prequel Era

Star Wars: Battlefront will not have space combat, nor will it launch with Prequel Trilogy era settings, vehicles, or characters.

“It’s not much about space,” Patrick Back, General Manager at DICE told IGN. “Most battles are planetary battles, so our focus right now is to make sure we only get that right. The core of Star Wars battles — the Endors, the Hoths, et cetera — you want to take that to perfection. You want to do it right.”

Bach continued, “Space is hard, right? Not from a

perspective, but from a logistical perspective. Is that fun? For us it doesn’t make sense to create a battle above you if you’re fighting other players who are not there to fight. Our focus is to do planetary battles.”

Star Wars: Battlefront Does Not Have a Campaign

Star Wars: Battlefront will not have a single-player or narrative campaign, DICE revealed to IGN. Rather than a traditional solo outing, Battlefront will rely on a set of short missions which can be played alone, or cooperatively via split-screen or online.

"I would say they occupy that space...where you play alone," General Manager of DICE Patrick Bach said. "Or you can play co-op, split screen or on the internet. The game is first and foremost a multiplayer game. Battlefront was a multiplayer game. That’s the game we wanted to create — to recreate the battles of the Original Trilogy."

This meant a proper campaign was out of the question. So how does co-op work?

The co-op missions are "connected," Bach said, "and they are quite different" from the regular competitive multiplayer. Missions are short, and intended to be replayed on higher difficulties. Producer Craig Mcleod offered more insight, stating, "Because it’s only a two-player experience you’re sharing with a friend, they’re custom built. "It’s not about pulling a section out of somewhere else and you just do them. I can’t go into specifics about what mission we’ll have, but when we think about multiplayer and co-op, what we’re really trying to do is immerse yourself in your Star Wars battle fantasies."

The first add-on pack for Star Wars: Battlefront will arrive on December 8, and it will be free for anyone who owns the game. Set on the desert wasteland seen in Episode 7’s teasers, and taking place one year after the assault on Endor, Battle of Jakku bridges Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

“This really ties in what we’re doing with the Original Trilogy era with The Force Awakens,” Producer Craig Mcleod told IGN. “The Battle of Jakku takes place a year after the Battle of Endor, and the only way you can experience or see it is in our game. That battle essentially leads to that battle-scarred landscape you see in the trailers. What’s even better is we’re delivering it for free to every player who owns the game. I think Kathleen Kennedy summed it up best: Star Wars is all about the fans.”

Evolve: Watch Metal Band Behemoth's Bassist Play the Behemoth Monster

Turtle Rock Studios on Friday released a new video called "Behemoth Plays Behemoth," wherein the bassist of metal band Behemoth--Tomasz Wróblewski AKA Orion--plays the Behemoth monster in Evolve.

"It's pretty much like being on stage," Orion says about playing Evolve. "It's the same feeling."

Joining Orion in his playthrough is George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, the lead signer of another metal band, Cannibal Corpse. Are they any good at the game? Watch the video and find out.

Behemoth is Evolve's newest Monster, added to the game on March 31 alongside a heap of other content, including additional maps, Hunters, and more.

Now, if we can only get EA's Origin game platform to team up with the metal band Origin...

Ray Of Light: Sunset Gets A Release Date

Empty chairs and empty tables

Peering through telescopes is one of those little in-game activities I enjoy a disproportionate amount; peeking through the viewfinder and switching to a porthole framing previously distant objects and people. The telescope peeking in Sunset [official site] was infused with meaning when I played a preview build and I hope there’s more to come when the game releases in full on 21 May.

Wot I Belatedly Think: Surface Pro 3

bigger on the outside

Older readers may recall not a lot, what with being old and all. Only slightly older readers may recall my talking about replacing my laptop with a Surface Pro 2 around 18 months ago. Microsoft’s tablet/laptop hybrid has served me reasonably well for work and play, but the one aspect of it I increasingly struggled with was the size.

10 Years After Release, Postal 2 Gets New Expansion

Batman v Superman Movie Trailer Leaks

It's been a big week for exciting new movie trailers. Yesterday, Disney released the next teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode VII -- The Force Awakens . And now, a trailer for Zack Snyder's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice has leaked, and you can watch the full video above--but be warned it's a bit blurry and was meant for an international audience so it has some subtitles.

But we do we get a closer look at Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. It also teases some story elements and has a generally dark tone.

The trailer is set to hit IMAX theaters this coming Monday, April 20, according to Snyder. As for the full movie, it's due to hit theaters in March 2016. The Social Network actor Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor, while Amy Adams stars as Lois Lane.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

The next Batman game, meanwhile, is this summer's Batman: Arkham Knight, the end of Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy. It launches in June for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Mortal Kombat X: Modder Unlocks Rain, Sindel and Baraka

A modder has found a way to make unplayable characters from Mortal Kombat X's story mode playable, replete with their own move sets.

XVermillion posted a couple of videos to YouTube of Rain, Sindel and Baraka in training mode on PC, along with an explanation about how he did it on Reddit.

In essence, he took assets located in the game's source files and renamed them so they matched the names currently used by those associated with Shinnok. As a result, the game thinks you're playing with Shinnok, but in actuality you look like one of the other three characters and are able to execute all their moves without hassle.

You are, are you not, Brother Against Brother: The Drawing of the Sword, the new turn-based American Civil War wargame from Western Civilization Software and Matrix Games? You’re priced at, let me see… £36 and, unlike many recent Slitherine Group releases you are not available on Steam? Good, now that’s established, I’ll explain my terms. As I’m sure you are aware, I’m a Very Busy Chap. My time, like platinum, good flapjack recipes, and airworthy de Havilland Mosquitos, is extremely precious. I am prepared to give you an audience, but that audience must end tonight at beddy-byes time. In other words, you have approximately ten hours to knock my socks off, and that ten hours starts… now.

Stick It To The Convenant: Halo Spartan Strike Out Now

The Micro Chief

Ask me to name a game in which I particularly like the guns, and I’ll look panicky for a moment, presuming you want me to confidently say the M-something upgraded with the thingamy-ma-death something from Call of Duty something, then intone something about recoil. I presume you will kill me with an actual gun if I fail to do this, what with your clearly caring an awful lot about guns. If my ers and ums don’t result in my sudden death, I’ll regain my composure after a few seconds and say ‘Halo, I guess. Like, everything has a purpose, and everything works particularly well in tandem with a different weapon type, and it all feels like a real strategy and a real choice, even though it’s all made up.’

This is why I’ve played every Halo game even when their self-fellating space magic nonsense-plots made me want to scream (hello, 2 and 3). This is why is why I thought ‘ooh, that’ll do’ when I saw twin-stick spin-off Spartan Strike was out today.

The Good, The Bad and Westerado: Double Barreled

westerado1.jpg Having just drawn my gun and decisively ended a conversation that wasn't really going anywhere, I must now do the right thing and let you know that Westerado: Double Barreled has just been released on Steam for Windows and Mac. Actually, if you hurry you might even grab it with a 20% off discount too.

Now, if you haven't deduced so already, let me also inform you that Westerado: Double Barreled is a playable spaghetti western with incredibly atmospheric and richly animated pixel-art graphics. Also, it's quite frankly brilliant, though I do have to admit I have only spent a few hours with it.

westerado2.jpg Then again, just like its aesthetic value, the fine mix of adventuring, exploring, shooting and mini-gaming is immediately evident only minutes after loading the thing up. Play a bit and you'll also discover a truly open-ended game with some great writing and the correct dosage of humour.

You can be an outlaw or a saint. A talker or a shooter. An explorer and an adventurer, who will hopefully manage to discover the desperado who murdered his family.

Google Chrome Browser Update Disables Unity Plugin

If you use Google’s web browser Chrome, you might notice that Unity games embedded in web pages no longer work as of the latest update. As they’ve planned to since 2013, Google have disabled support for the way the Unity plugin works. Unity 5 does support WebGL, which works without plugins, but for now that’ll leave a whole load of browser games not working. You can re-enable support temporarily, if you don’t mind digging in settings, or simply use a different browser.

It’s been a while since I had to fire up another browser to visit certain websites that wouldn’t work properly in mine. It’s like the browser wars all over again!
