Gunvolt: The Cure for Your Mega Man Ills?

Azure Striker: Gunvolt is a game made by the former Mega Man Zero team, and it’s a firm reminder that, despite the millions of advancements found in today’s video games, the 2D action genre is far from dead. Like Shovel Knight, Gunvolt leans on nostalgia but stands on its own with some cool new ideas.


Combat unfolds in an ebb and flow that feels different from its 2D predecessors. Assuming the role of Gunvolt, a pony-tailed 17 year-old that wields the power of lightning, you alternate between tagging enemies with a relatively weak pistol and using the powerful Flashfield -- an electrical sphere that rips into tagged enemies with powerful surges of lighting. At first, the idea behind combat seems shockingly simple: Tag an enemy up to three times with your pistol, then fry them with the Flashfield. Rinse. Repeat. However, the true elegance behind this system really shines through once you upgrade Gunvolt’s main weapon. Doing so allows you to tag more enemies at once and cause more havoc. This is especially handy against some of the tough-as-nails bosses.
