Despite its horror movie-inspired title, Night in the Woods is not a scary game. Well, unless the thought of becoming sick from snacking on germ-y donuts frightens you; then it’s terrifying. But more on the poisoned sweets in a sec.
First and foremost, this charming indie is a narratively-focused adventure game platformer or, as co-designer Alec Holowka calls it, a “hanging-out simulator.” Sure enough, the main objective of my demo is to simply find my friend Greg and “hang out” with him. As Mae the cat – a troubled teen who has recently dropped out of college and returned to her small hometown of Possum Springs – I explore my autumnal-inspired surroundings; the talking animal citizens – decked out in flannel and seasonal plaids – and the falling leaves of orange, yellow, and red give the tight-knit town a warm, welcoming feel.
