Ironfall: Invasion Is Gears of War-Lite on Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo’s 3DS doesn’t have anything like Ironfall: Invasion, and that’s really its main appeal — it’s Nintendo’s flagship third-person, cover-based shooter. It borrows from the best, adopting Gears of War’s sticky cover and active reload outright. In that regard, it feels familiar in a good way — competent and reliable, but rarely exceptional.


Ironfall isn’t trying to break new ground, so in bringing the Gears of War-style experience to handheld, it succeeds. Enemies popped in and out of cover and flanked me, which kept me on the move and tucked behind walls, but I’d have liked a greater variety of robotic foes to fight. Early on in the campaign, and in the wave-based cooperative multiplayer mode, I only saw one sort of rifle-wielding threat. Hopefully that changes as the campaign proceeds, and as waves become more challenging.
