In an era where we’re starved for a true successor to the Mega Man series, Mighty No. 9 is the brightest beacon of hope. It’s a truly remarkable project that brings Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune back to the 2D action genre that made him famous.
On the surface, combat might look familiar, but it has a cool twist thanks to the Absorption Dash. As enemies take damage from Beck’s blaster, they enter into a destabilized state. By dashing forward into foes, Beck can eliminate the enemy and absorb Xel -- a resource that can grant special bonuses like more powerful shots -- at the same time.
"We had to walk a fine line when making the game," Inafune told IGN in a translated interview. "You need to have that classic feeling of it being a classic 2D side-scrolling action game. Ultimately, you have to have some of that, but if that’s all you have, then it feels very limiting and it feels like it doesn’t have that core mechanic that stands out or gives it personality. That’s why we implemented the Absorption Dash."
