What happened to the days of happily slaughtering hordes of blood-thirsty abominations, pumping round after round into entire lines of evil monstrosities in rapid succession? For all their high production values, and increasingly ambitious stories, first-person shooters have begun to give us less actual shooting than they used to. It’s why the fans at QuakeCon reacted so positively to the non-stop action of the re-imagined Doom, and why I felt so good about The Killing Floor 2 after seeing it in action for the first time. Its focus seems to rest clearly on overwhelming you with swarms of bio-engineered horrors, and rewarding you with a hyper-violent gore-fest as you ventilate them.
