The original Chaos: The Battle of Wizards --a turn based strategy game designed and developed by Julian Gollop years before he moved on to X-COM-- was a masterpiece. Actually, it still is and remains a fluid, extremely clever and highly tactical game that has finally been kickstarted to modernity under the guise of Chaos Reborn.
Not unlike the original, Chaos Reborn casts you as a wizard armed with a staff and an impressive selection of spells. Spells able to conjure deadly creatures to fight along you, damage your opponent(s), change the very battlefield you are fighting on, create illusions and, brilliantly, actually influence how magic works. The more chaos spells combating wizards cast, for example, the more towards chaos things will go and the more effective chaos magic will become.
What's more, Chaos Reborn manages to look wonderful and keep the smart colour-coding of '80s Chaos intact, while crucially (and masterfully) updating the way your wizard is controlled and allowing for such contemporary luxuries as online play. Oh, and after a few battles I can assure you this is an absolutely amazing multiplayer game. An excellent re-imagining of its classic forefather and something I can see myself playing for many years.
Of course, with Chaos Reborn currently being a Steam Early Access (Windows, Mac, Linux) offering, lots of things are missing; mainly the single player/co-op elements, the RPG mode, lots of spells, guilds, realms creation tools and more. On the other hand, what is there is already fully playable and quite frankly brilliant provided, that is, you are up for 2 to 4 players wizard battles over 40 arenas using over 30 spells.
