Revisiting Grim Fandango

In the world of video games something strange happened in the mid-1990s. It didn’t happen all at once, or even within the same year, but it still happened fairly quickly. A general consensus was reached, you see, that 2D graphics were simply too old fashioned for the modern, polygon-obsessed, baggy jeans-wearing video game player of 1995.

To quote a hypothetical American teenager from the era, 3D graphics were “tonar” and “rad to the max,” while 2D graphics “be trippin’ yo”. To quote a not-so hypothetical Australian teenager from the era (i.e. me), 3D graphics were “grouse” and “sick,” whereas 2D graphics were “off-tap.”
